The OUSA Kayak Racing Club is very active for its size due to the enthusiastic nature of our members and dedicated coaches. Check out our upcoming races, events and training sessions. facebook

Winter Training Times (TBC)

All regular training sessions take place at the kayak club. Check the club Facebook page for updates and cancellations.

Please arrive 20-30 minutes early to do a warm up and stretch and be ready to get onto the water at the times above. Early morning sessions on Monday and Wednesday go ahead whatever the weather but will be land based if the weather is rough.

The Winter Series 2018

The series consists of seven races (one each month) and are sponsored by Watercooled Sports and Vaaka. All paddlers are welcome. There will also be courses for Stand up Paddle Board, novice kayakers and Waka Ama. Entry is $5 per person and PFDs are compulsory.

Sunday July 22nd, Taieri Mouth, 12/4/2km (also part of CRNZ's 'Kayak Krazy' series)
Sunday August 19th, Blueskin Bay, 8/4/2km
Sunday September 19th, Careys Bay, 12/4/2km (plus hot chocolate afterward at Careys Bay Hotel)

Grade Two River Paddling Assessment Program 2018

Theory evening
7PM on the 11th July 2018 upstairs in the ORKC clubrooms (free, but you must be an ORKC member).

Pool Session One
Will cover capsizing; throwing and receiving throw bags; deep water rescues; bracing; forward and reverse sweep strokes. Pool entry is $6.50 (or $4 for students) and $5 for kayak hire (or $6 if you also require a spray skirt + $20 bond). There may also be a small cost to cover instruction (~$5). If you miss the pool sessions then you will need to demonstrate capsizing and swimming in the Dunedin harbour before heading away on any river trips.

August River Trip
In the morning we will paddle the Waipori slalom course (subject to river conditions) in white water kayaks and practising our river skills. In the afternoon we will paddle the white water kayaks at Brighton beach where we will paddle white water kayaks. This session will develop your low brace and sweep strokes, rolling, capsizing and confidence in cold water. Cost: $25 for gear rental (white water kayak, helmet, spray skirt and PFD) plus ~$40 for instructor.

September River Trip
Beaumont shuttles. Cost: $25 for gear rental (white water kayak, helmet, spray skirt and PFD) plus ~$40 for instructor.

Before you can be awarded your Grade 2 Certificate you must complete a log book with 5 additional river trips (if you already have had adequate river experience this number may be reduced at the discretion of the OKRC coach Brendan).

If you are interested in attending any of these sessions you MUST RSVP to or to Coach Brendan.

Regattas and Training Camps

Kayak Krazy 10KM Series

Held at clubs around the country, this series has races for all ages and abilities. You can track your points and progress against other paddlers. It also counts towards NZ Paddler Series points. Find out about upcoming races in the series at the CRNZ Events page.

South Island Sprint Kayak Championships (30th September - 1st October) Lake Ruataniwha

This will be the forth annual South Island Champs where South Island clubs will vie for the coveted South Island Trophy. Incorporating the South Island School Championships. Accommodation will be at the Rowing Centre on Lake Ruataniwha and meals are provided. This is one of the few opportunities for us in the year to participate in a sprint regatta, so come along to show your support so that we can get more events like this in the South Island in the future. Open to all abilities and with divisional style races (rather than age groups/genders). To share transport talk with Coach Brendan O'Neill. For information about the regatta visit CRNZ.

Blue Lakes 1

Blue Lakes 1 kicks off the national canoe sprint events for the season. Saturday 13th October 2018, Rotorua.

Blue Lakes 2

Blue Lakes 2 is the second of the national canoe sprint regattas. Saturday 1st December 2018, Rotorua.

2019 NZCT Canoe Sprint National Championships and Oceania Championships

OUSA KRC will be sending a team to the National and Oceania Canoe Sprint Champs on Friday the 15th of February 2019. Talk with coach Brendan if you are interested in participating.

Other Races

Southern Lakes Multisport Club 2018 Winter Series

Kayak races held fortnightly in June and July in various locations around Central Otago. For more information visit the SLMSC website.

White Island Race (Labour Weekend, October)

A 5km paddle from St. Clair Beach around White Island and back. Open to qualified surf lifeguards paddling non-powered craft. For more info visit SCSLSC.

The Salmon Run (13th October 2018)

A 36km road bike ride, 14km kayak down the braided Rakaia river and an 11.5km run through the riverbed and farmland. Participants must have their grade 2 certificate. The Salmon Run.

Rasdex Waimak Classic Series (9th December 2017)

A 70km paddle down the Waimakariri River along the C2C course. Participants must have their grade 2 certificate.">Rasdex Class

Clutha Classic (28th December 2018)

A 48km paddle from Lake Wanaka to the Lindis River. Grade 2 certificate compulsory. For more info visit SLMSC.
